WHAT TO EXPECT

This once in a lifetime Solar Eclipse Adventure in Iceland will simultaneously take you off the beaten path and on the Path of Totality! From waterfalls, to geothermal pools, to volcanoes, to glaciers - we’ll get up close and personal with the best of Iceland as we gather for the celestial event. This is the perfect trip for adventurous astrology enthusiasts and stargazers, or for anyone who’s looking for a true once in a lifetime experience in some of the planet’s most unique landscapes. Even in August, the Icelandic weather will keep us on our toes during our day hikes, but we’ll have several chances to relax and recharge in the geothermal pools, making this a great adventure for all levels. Please read the itinerary for the full scoop on what to expect!

We rated this Iceland trip a 2.5 out of 5 on the WHOA Adventure difficulty scale because we’ll be on the go exploring rugged, remote and unpredictable landscapes everyday, with plenty of stops in geothermal pools to relax.

THE CONDITIONS
EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

If you don’t like the weather in Iceland, just wait five minutes. This is the theme on all of our Iceland Adventures! In fact, there’s an Icelandic saying that we live by on this adventure, “Þetta Reddast” which translates to “It will all work out okay.” In Iceland, more than anywhere else, the weather will ultimately dictate our itinerary. It’s actually part of the true Icelandic experience, and it’s what the locals do every day! If it’s too wet or hot or cold, we might switch things up for your safety and enjoyment. No matter what, you’re going to have the time of your life. After all, unexpected detours are where the best stories are!

While we’re all looking forward to the eclipse, be ready to embrace what Mother Nature throws our way. If it's cloudy during the solar eclipse, the clouds can block your view of the Sun, making it difficult or even impossible to see the eclipse directly. However, you might still notice the eerie, dimming effect as daylight fades and the sky darkens, especially during totality—like a strange twilight in the middle of the day. Some people say it feels otherworldly, even if you can't see the eclipse itself. Clear skies or not, these six days will be filled with unforgettable experiences, and always remember the one thing that we can all control is our attitude!

TRAINING
GRIT AND GLACIERS

Iceland’s landscapes are straight out of a make-believe fantasy, but don’t let that fool you! This is a REAL adventure with six packed days and all the ups and downs that come along with it! Bottom line, the better trained you are, the more enjoyable your experience will be. Stay active and start breaking in your boots and daypack on training hikes ASAP. As with all WHOA Adventures, prep yourself as much as possible - your future self will thank you! If you’re looking for more tips check out our expert 6 step training guide.

You'll immediately start to see and feel the power of the sea and lava fields that make the land of fire and ice so special! Today is all about taking it easy and getting a good intro to Iceland before our epic active week begins. As we make our way along the south coast to Midgard Base Camp, we’ll make some scenic detours, like a stop by the iconic Blue Lagoon for a soak in geothermal waters! By early evening we'll reach our base camp, enjoy dinner together and get briefed on the adventure that lies ahead.

DAY 2

Hike Thórsmörk Highlands

AUGUST 9

We'll spend today hiking and exploring the highlands of Iceland— Thórsmörk, aka the Valley of Thor, the God of Thunder. Thórsmörk is surrounded by glaciers on three sides and its unique beauty and formations come from eruptions that happened underneath the glaciers. Needless to say, there are endless trails and views to discover!

Hike Time: 6+ hours
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Stay: Midgard Base Camp

DAY 3

EXPLORE THE WESTMAN ISLANDS

AUGUST 10

Today, we'll wake up early and head along the southern coast for a short ferry ride to Vestmannaeyjar—the Westman Islands! These unique islands have a population around 4,400, and are one of Iceland’s best kept secrets. August is peak puffin season, and is one of the best months to see puffins up close before they head back out to sea. The cliffs of Heimaey, the main island, are teeming with them, and it’s pure magic to witness these quirky little seabirds in action! We’ll also hike to the top of the Eldfell Volcano, known locally as “the hill of fire” before heading back to base camp for dinner.

Hike Time: 4+ hours
Included Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner
Stay: Midgard Base Camp

DAY 4

HIKE + LAGOON to THE WEST COAST

AUGUST 11

After breakfast, we’ll gather for an exclusive eclipse lecture with Iceland’s Eclipse Man (yes, there’s a local eclipse expert, and we know him)! Then we’ll head west to Akranes, stopping for a hike in Þingvellir National Park, and dip in thermal waters at Hvammsvík Baths. In the evening we’ll settle into our charming huts, enjoy a home cooked meal, and get excited for the eclipse that is upon us!

DAY 5

SOLAR ECLIPSE HIKE

AUGUST 12

The day we have all been waiting for! In the morning, we’ll do some hiking within the Path of Totality to scout the best place for our viewing party. The last time Iceland had a solar eclipse was 1954 and the next one will be 2196, so this is bound to be an event like no other! After our special eclipse experience, we’ll celebrate together with a special celebratory dinner and champagne.

Hike Time: 3+ hours
Included Meals:
Breakfast, Lunch, Celebratory Dinner
Stay: Móar Guesthouse
