Everything you'll see here has been thoughtfully and thoroughly trail tested by our WHOAlums and GALs to get the coveted official WHOA Adventure Seal of Approval!

It’s important to note that this Gear Guide is an ever-growing, community built collection of great gear for you, by you! Our main goal is to create a diverse catalog of reccos that reflect the diversity and values of our entire WHOA community - all shapes, sizes and styles! If there’s something you love that you think we should add to the Gear Guide shoot us an email here with the deets!

OUR #1 WHOA PRO TIP
THE BEST gear FOR YOUR ADVENTURES IS ALSO THE BEST FOR THE ENVIRONMENT (and your wallet too!)

We believe it's important to spend money to support companies that make good quality products and uphold strong ethics and values, and the brands we feature here do just that! It's always worth it in the long run to put in the research it takes to find good quality gear that fits you right, and can be by your side for decades, through whatever type of adventures you find your self on!

Many of the brands in our guide make it a priority to make products that are socially and environmentally responsible: Osprey will repair items for life. Patagonia created a website called Worn Wear to resell used Patagonia clothing as a means of reducing waste. Stasher bags are a reusable, plastic-free way to store your snacks and organize your things. You’ll be inspired by the innovative ways these brands are stepping up to be sustainable and socially responsible!

Sharing experiences and advice with others who have done something similar before makes all the difference. Lucky for you, that’s what the WHOA community is all about and we’re here for you!

Columbia Puffy Vest

TRAIL TESTED BY WHOA GAL
Kathy M
-
Kilimanjaro & Peru

WHY IT ROCKS

A vest is a great layer for balancing your temp and keeping you warm (but not too warm) as you hike. Kathy wore this one most of the way up Kili and uses it all the time while hiking in Minnesota.

BONUS POINTS

Columbia has a GREAT selection of plus size jackets, pants, base and mid weight layers online! Also, in order to lower their environmental impact as a company, 80% of the Polyester they use is recycled.

SUSTAINABILITY

All of Columbia’s down is independently certified to the Responsible Down Standard (RDS). Products certified to the RDS contain down or feathers from farms certified to animal welfare requirements.

Patagonia Capilene Air Crew

TRAIL TESTED BY WHOAlum
Tiffany S
-
Kilimanjaro

WHY IT ROCKS

This super warm, light base layer is a blend of merino wool and recycled polyester, so it wicks moisture, resists odor and dries in a flash.

PRO TIP

It looks like a light sweater, so you can wear it casually off the trail too. It runs slightly large, and it’s best to buy tight, hugging your body so you can layer. Also, it’s sweater-material, so be careful around gear that has Velcro, because it will pull!

SUSTAINABILITY

Since 1985, Patagonia has pledged 1% of sales to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment through 1% for the planet.

KORA Yushu
LONG SLEEVE Crew

TRAIL TESTED BY WHOA Co-Founder
Allison F
-

Kilimanjaro & Peru

WHY IT ROCKS

This long-sleeve ultra-warm crew-neck base layer is made out of Yak and Merino wools, and it offers generous length in body and arm, so it won't ride up and will keep the cold out and your warmth in.

PRO TIP

You can explore the great outdoors from Fall to Spring with this comfortable yet stylish base layer. Yak wool is fine, which traps air between the multiple fibers to keep you extra warm. Its Himalayan-inspired accent trims are unique to each item and it makes for a perfect top to pair with jeans if you're doing more than just exploring the outdoors!

SUSTAINABILITY

KORA buys their wool from Tibetan communities to ensure its origin and quality. PLUS they call their base layers Hima-Layers from their Tibetan roots, who doesn't love a good pun?

Columbia Whirlibird Interchange Jacket

TRAIL TESTED BY WHOA GAL
Kathy M
-
Kilimanjaro & Peru

WHY IT ROCKS

This is warm and waterproof, so perfect for intense conditions like summit night on Kilimanjaro. Like the name says it’s 3 jackets in one and comes with a removable insulated puffy, and a waterproof outer shell (with armpit zips for ventilation)!

PRO TIPS

This jacket is a perfect example of the power of layering - you can wear the pieces alone or they fit together perfectly. Interchange jackets are multi-purpose and a great way to get more bang for your buck!

SUSTAINABILITY

Columbia partners with the Planet Water Foundation, a U.S. nonprofit that helps combat our global water crisis by bringing clean water to 15 countries around the world, to build water towers. In 2019 they helped build 7 new towers and in 2022 they have a goal to build 25 more!

Kilimanjaro & Peru

WHY IT ROCKS

This lightweight jacket is great for layering and is super easy to compact down into it’s zippered chest pocket (which comes with a carabiner, so you can easily clip it anywhere). It helps retain body heat, and has a high neck with elastic cuffs and drawcord hem to protect you from the wind.

PRO TIP

It fits true to size, and is great for women who run larger up top. NOTE: it’s water repellent, not waterproof!

SUSTAINABILITY

It’s made from 100% recycled nylon and Fair Trade Certified sewn - Patagonia always FTW on sustainability! (Oh and, of course there’s this!)

Outdoor Research Alti Mittens

TRAIL TESTED BY WHOA Co-Founder
Allison F
-
Kilimanjaro, Elbrus & Peru

WHY THEY ROCK

If you're like Allison and your hands easily get cold then mittens are for you! They’re fully seam-taped, waterproof and made with PrimaLoft insulation, which resists water, dries quickly and insulates when damp. Plus, they come with removable liner mittens for maximum warmth and comfort - they’re like 3 mittens in 1. These versatile mittens will take you from light snow showers to below-freezing temps like you’ll get on summit nights!

PRO TIP

Generally speaking, mittens keep your hands warmer than gloves because your fingers generate more heat when they're together, and mitts trap that heat in.

SUSTAINABILITY

Outdoor Research is a proud founding member of the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) Climate Action Corps. Not only are they meeting all expectations of the Climate Action Corps, they’re also developing their own plan and approach to measuring their carbon footprint. Together with the OIA, they’re making changes to help make the outdoor industry the world’s first climate-positive industry by 2030! Learn more here.

Keen Targhee III Waterproof Mid

TRAIL TESTED BY WHOAlum
Kerry A
-
Kilimanjaro & Upstate NY

WHY THEY ROCK

SUSTAINABILITY

Keen is the first footwear brand to be PFC-free (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, often called "forever chemicals" because they don't break down in the environment.). WHY THEY ROCK

They are waterproof & feature Asolo’s patented sole technology that provides optimum performance on all different types of terrain. They have special fit technology, and Jen says they are without a doubt the most comfortable boots she’s hiked in (and this girl hikes)!

PRO TIP

They run a bit bigger than your regular sneaker size, so try them out in the store to make sure you get the best fit.

SUSTAINABILITY

Asolo offers a resoling service for any of their boots that are in good shape, but the soles are worn down. This extends the life of their shoes and helps reduce what ends up in landfills.

La Sportiva Nepal Cube GTX Mountaineering Boot

TRAIL TESTED BY WHOAlum
Ginger S
-
Elbrus

WHY THEY ROCK

Not all mountaineering boots are created equal and if you are willing to make an investment on a state of the art, durable boot that will perform well in the coldest climates, highest peaks, and most adventurous outings (think Elbrus!) then look no further. This single boot system is lightweight, sturdy, durable, warm, and waterproof with Gore-Tex technology and a great lacing system to help customize your own perfect fit to prevent heel slipping and lifting (goodbye, blisters!). These boots also include a removable tongue insert which can further customize the fit.

PRO TIP

Size up! Ginger recommends sizing up a half to one whole size larger than your regular hiking boots. These tend to run a little bit more narrow, so some ladies wear the men’s version of this boot for a better fit. Also, keep in mind that mountaineering socks are generally thicker than your typical hiking socks which means you may need a little more room.

SUSTAINABILITY

La Sportiva’s North American headquarters in Colorado operates a zero-waste facility and their Italian headquarters uses 100% renewable energy.

Sawyer Squeeze Water Filtration System

TRAIL TESTED BY WHOA GAL
Retha C
-
Kilimanjaro, Peru, Patagonia…basically everywhere the Roaming Nanny goes!

WHY IT ROCKS

Retha refuses to be part of the problem when it comes to plastic water bottles, which take on average 450 years to fully decompose! With this system, you can easily turn water from freshwater lakes, rivers, streams, and faucets into fresh, safe drinking water no matter where you are in the world. It removes 99.99999% of all bacteria and protozoa, such as salmonella, cholera, E.coli, giardia, and cryptosporidium.

BONUS POINTS

The entire system weighs just 3 ounces and fits in the palm of your hand. The durable, collapsible reusable squeeze pouches (32 or 16-ounce) roll up when empty, so they won't take up space in your pack or suitcase. Retha hasn’t purchased a bottle of water (other than an emergency bottle when she couldn’t find a tap) in over 2 years!

SUSTAINABILITY

Not only does this system eliminate the need to buy plastic water bottles, but each Sawyer product you buy is also a contribution to their 10+ year old project, bringing clean water programs to people in need domestically, internationally, and in disaster relief missions all around the world.

Black Diamond Distance FLZ Trekking Poles

TRAIL TESTED BY WHOA GAL
Nicole J
-
Kilimanjaro, Peru & Iceland

WHY THEY ROCK

Trekking poles are essential for longer distances, snowy trails, and downhill slopes (to save your knees)! Z-poles are great because they weigh less, collapse and extend easier than traditional models, and take up less space when folded.

PRO TIP

No matter which poles you get, make sure that they are adjustable to account for the varying terrain since they need to be set to different heights when going uphill versus downhill. For flat terrain, your elbows should be at a 90-degree angle. However, for downhill, they should be 5 - 10 cm longer so you aren’t bending too much, and they should be 5 - 10 cm shorter on uphill so you are not over-stretching.

SUSTAINABILITY

Black Diamond is a founding member of the Outdoor Industry Association’s Climate Action Corps, advocating for sustainable recreation practices, trade policy, ethical business innovation, and increasing outdoor participation.

TRAIL TESTED BY WHOA Co-Founder
Allison F
-
Kilimanjaro, Peru & Elbrus

WHY IT ROCKS

These are a great plastic-free, sustainable way to store gear, especially bulky sleeping bags. They save space (compressing things down to about a third of their original size!) and are waterproof, so they keep your things dry if you encounter rain- which is very likely on an adventure!

BONUS POINTS

Many countries, including Tanzania and New Zealand, have banned single-use plastics (yay!). Packing with reusable bags like these to separate and waterproof your gear is a much better and more sustainable solution than plastic bags.

SUSTAINABILITY

Sea to Summit is in the process of transitioning all its packaging to responsibly sourced card-based and easily recyclable materials which will reduce single-use plastic and maximize carton efficiency across our entire product line.

Veronica B
-
Peru & the Appalachian Trail

WHY IT ROCKS

Lower temperatures cause these reactions to happen more slowly. On cold nights it's a good idea to keep your tech warm so the battery functions properly. Put your battery at the bottom of your sleeping bag at night to keep it warm.

SUSTAINABILITY

Anker makes their batteries from recycled components, plus they’re working towards making rechargeable batteries without the drawbacks of traditional lithium batteries.
