KILIMANJARO
HIKE TO THE ROOF OF AFRICA
VIA THE MACHAME ROUTE + SAFARI
Kilimanjaro is more than the tallest mountain in Africa. It’s more than a beautiful trek that carries you from lush rainforest to an Arctic summit. Kilimanjaro is a transformative journey where you learn what you’re capable of. It’s a place where strangers become teammates and trusted friends.
Our women-powered climbs are built around something deeper: supporting incredible local female guides and women owned businesses, creating space for women to lift one another up, and stepping into the confidence that comes from doing something hard together. When you climb with WHOA, you’re not just joining a group — you’re joining a movement! You’re expanding access, representation, opportunity, and community on the mountain.
This mountain is where WHOA was born more than a decade ago, and it remains the heart of our mission. We’ve guided hundreds of women to the summit — women who embraced the unknown, trusted their grit, and found strength they didn’t know they had. We know this place, we know how to prepare you for it, and we know how to make the experience meaningful on every level. If you’re ready to push your comfort zone, discover new strengths, and walk away with a story that will stay with you forever, keep scrolling. You’re exactly where you’re meant to be!

**For our carbon offsetting, we do our best to crunch the numbers and accurately calculate the carbon footprint the best we can with the information that we have. It’s not a perfect system and carbon offsetting isn’t an exact science, but we believe it’s more important to take action now, in every way that we can. All our offsetting programs are certified by our partners at Sustainable Travel International. At the moment, our traveler’s international airfare to the destination is beyond our scope, and not included. Flights are the largest carbon emitter on most of our adventures, so we encourage all our travelers to consider doing it independently through the airline or with our partners at STI.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Want to test your limits and find out what you are truly capable of? You’re in the right place! Kilimanjaro has a special place in our hearts because WHOA’s roots began right here. We know firsthand how this mountain can shift something in you. It is not technical, but it is demanding. Every single day you will ask your body and your mind to show up, and they will.
You do not need to be an elite athlete. What you do need is grit, dedication, and a willingness to push through discomfort. If you are the kind of person who keeps going when things get hard, who can find humor in adversity, and who thrives when you are part of a supportive team, Kilimanjaro is the right kind of challenge.
Before you commit, be sure to read the Daily Breakdown, so you understand the realities and rewards. If seven days of hiking at altitude, unpredictable weather, sleeping in a tent, and yes, possibly sacrificing a toenail, doesn’t scare you, but rather intrigues you. That’s a good sign! You’ll love this adventure if you’re curious about a culture outside your own, you’re excited to learn a little Swahili (poa!), and you’re ready to unplug from routine and reconnect with yourself and a team of adventurous women!
We rated our Kilimanjaro trip a 5 out of 5 on the WHOA Adventure difficulty scale because of the extreme altitude and sustained effort. The final summit push happens in the middle of the night, on minimal sleep, in well below freezing temperatures, and it becomes one of the proudest moments of your life!
CONDITIONS
THE HIGH LIFE
This is a high altitude adventure, and the conditions on Kilimanjaro, especially the higher we climb, are extreme, unpredictable, and out of our control. That is part of its beauty. While Kilimanjaro is often called every (wo)man’s Everest, do not underestimate what altitude does to your body. At elevations over 3,000 ft, your VO2 max decreases about 2.6 percent for every 1,000 ft. What does that mean? It means sluggishness, loss of appetite, fatigue, and the inability to exert the same effort you can at lower elevations.
Altitude sickness is also a real possibility, and it is a major factor in what makes Kilimanjaro so challenging. You may feel amazing one minute and drained the next. You may need to slow your pace when you least expect it. That is normal. Here’s the expectation we set: you do not power through this mountain, you listen to it. We take things slowly, we hydrate like it is our job, we support each other, and we check in with ourselves with honesty. That mindset is what gets hikers to the summit safely.
Be ready to embrace whatever Mother Nature throws our way. When it gets cold (and it will, we are hiking to an Arctic climate zone), we layer up, we laugh, we dance, and we take in the moment. Attitude is the one constant we can control, and it makes all the difference up there.
TRAINING
IT DOESN'T GET EASIER, YOU GET STRONGER
We are not going to sugar coat it. Turning this dream into a summit moment takes work. You will be hiking for seven days straight with a full daypack, with ups, downs, long stretches, and tired legs. The honest truth is this: the more you prepare, the more you will enjoy the journey. Training is not a box you check. It is the foundation that makes the whole experience meaningful instead of miserable.
Start now. Stay active. Get your boots worn in. Get your daypack comfortable. Go on hikes with elevation gain, even small ones. Build habits that make your body and mind more resilient. Your future self and your team will be grateful you did.
Sometimes we can’t get past that little voice that wonders: “Am I fit enough? How do I train? Where do I even start?” If that’s the case with you, meet our partner and founder of Trailblazer Wellness, Becki Rupp. She’s a certified personal trainer who offers virtual personal training and adventure coaching to build your strength, stamina and confidence, so you can make the most of your adventures and your LIFE! She’ll work with you to create a customized WHOA Kilimanjaro training plan based on your current fitness level, so you’ll have measurable progress, both mentally and physically, before you get on the plane and lace up those hiking boots! No crash courses. No shame. Just steady, thoughtful, effective preparation. You can book a free consultation to see if it feels right for you.

FAQ
-
Kilimanjaro is located in Tanzania on the north border near Kenya, and has the highest point in Africa, Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). It is the tallest free-standing mountain in the world! While classified as a mountain, Kilimanjaro is actually made up of three volcanic cones that were formed by the Great Rift Valley. Kilimanjaro is one of the seven summits, but it's not classified as a technical climb, and is sometimes called Everyman's (or Everywoman’s!) Everest because it’s the most attainable of the world’s seven summits. Check out our KILIMANJARO ADVENTURE GUIDE for a trail map and more info on its magnificent and diverse wildlife, climate zones!
Kilimanjaro is extra special to us because WHOA travel was born in 2013 when Co-Founders Allison and Danielle climbed Kili for the first time, and experienced the unstoppable power we all have to conquer challenges when we join forces and put our minds towards achieving something amazing. It was something they knew they needed to share with other women around the world! Summiting Kilimanjaro is the accomplishment of a lifetime, and, we know first hand, it's one that will leave you with a changed perspective of yourself and the world around you. Nothing worth having comes easy, but with dedication, and the support of the WHOA family, you can stand on the roof of Africa!

Empowering and connecting women through adventure is at the heart of everything we do at WHOA. Our special style of giving back is about sharing experiences with local women and their communities - it’s something that makes our adventures more meaningful for everyone! From our guide teams to the hotels we stay at, we go the distance to find amazing local partners and small businesses that share our values, which in turn creates the most authentic, sustainable and mutually beneficial travel experiences.
For Kilimanjaro, we provide the opportunity for local women in the region to join us on climbs to experience and conquer the mountain that they’ve lived next to their whole lives. The stories and experiences we share with one another over the course of our adventures creates special connections that inspire and transcend the mountain. You can meet some of our fantastic former climbers on our blog, or watch this 360 video featuring, Elizabeth, a local climber from one of our International Women’s Day summits!
While we like to dance and have fun on the trail, safety is the #1 priority at WHOA. Our mountain guides have received extensive training in first aid, mountain rescue, wildlife, and are registered with the Kilimanjaro National Park (KINAPA). We also work closely with The Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) to ensure our crew receives ethical treatment and the fair wages that they deserve. Like KPAP, we recognize the value of the demanding labor our porters and guides perform, and we’re dedicated to helping them constantly improve the safety and quality of the Kilimanjaro experience for everyone. It goes without saying, our Tanzanian mountain crew is the best in the business, and you'll quickly become one big family on the mountain!
We’re also dedicated to protecting the places we love to explore, and in 2019 launched our sustainability initiatives that strive to lessen our impact and encourages our community to be responsible travelers!
Above all, at WHOA, we make sure that all our adventures support women, the local community, and fill a need that is of value to our partners. For that reason, the partnerships can and do vary depending on their needs, the season, and the abilities and desires of our group. In each case, we do due diligence to seek out local partners that are doing valuable, sustainable work, and we work closely with them to understand their needs and create an experience that will truly be of value to them and you!

One of the great things about Kilimanjaro is that every day is a completely new and exciting adventure with diverse and different landscapes to take in! That said, there are some things that remain constant from day to day. Every morning you and your tent buddy will be woken up bright and early to pack up your things, have coffee, fill your water bladders, eat breakfast, and head out for a full day of hiking! We’ll be walking at a pace that is probably slower than you are used to (pole pole, as they say in Swahili), and this is to help your body properly and safely acclimatize. You’ll always have a certified local mountain guide with you when you’re trekking (we maintain a 1:4 guide/climber ratio), and we'll take breaks for pictures, and snacks along the way. You will carry what you need for the day (layers, snacks, water, sunscreen, etc.) in your daypack, and our crew will carry all the tents, gear and your large duffel from camp to camp for you. They’ll usually have our entire camp set up by the time we reach it in the late afternoon - Did we mention how amazing these guys are!? When we get to our camps in the evening, we encourage you to enjoy the spectacular views and unwind a bit before dinnertime. Dinners are always well-balanced and usually consist of soup, rice or pasta, sauce, a protein and fruit for dessert. Bedtime is usually early, as you'll want to be well rested for the next day of hiking that awaits!
-
There's always a great mix of solo travelers, pairs, and groups of friends, but the greatest thing about a WHOA Adventure is that we walk in as strangers and leave as family! If you're traveling solo, we'll pair you up with another solo traveler to room with before the trek and tent buddy with on the trail. You'll be amazed at how quickly bonds are formed between our mountain family!

Kilimanjaro is a tremendous physical and mental undertaking, so training is essential for your safety and enjoyment! There’s no such thing as being too prepared. Bottom line, the fitter and stronger you are, the better your experience will be. Aerobic fitness allows your body to function more efficiently with less oxygen for consecutive days of high altitude hiking, and being strong and conditioned makes it easier for your body to handle the stress of walking up and downhill.
One of the best ways to train is to get out there and hike as much as possible. After all, that’s what you will be doing on the mountain! Train at least a few days a week walking and/or jogging on inclines and declines to simulate the ups and downs on Kilimanjaro. If you don’t have trails accessible, practice uphill on a treadmill or stair climber, and downhill on a long staircase. Over the course of your training, gradually increase the time and distance, while maintaining a moderate pace. While you’re training, always wear and break in the boots and day pack you plan on bringing! This will help prevent blisters and get your shoulders, back and hips used to the points of contact and weight.
In addition to aerobic training, incorporate a day or two per week of strength training for your core, upper body and legs. This will increase your stamina and help you feel more comfortable lifting and carrying your pack. Do some stretching after each workout too – bonus points for weekly (or more!) yoga sessions.
Before you leave, you need to be able to hike comfortably for a full day (approx. 8-10 hours) for multiple days, with elevation changes, while carrying a full day pack. If you have the opportunity to hike at high altitude, take advantage of it! It’s the best and only way to get used to the feeling of being active with less oxygen. As with all training, you should taper off and rest the last 2 weeks leading up to the big event, so your body has time to recover.
Investing the time to prepare yourself will make it that much easier to enjoy your time on the mountain. If you currently have a not-so-healthy lifestyle, use the climb as your motivation to change! Eat healthier. Drink less. Don’t smoke. Get more sleep. Don’t worry. Be happy! And remember, physical training is just one part of getting in shape. Having a positive attitude will work wonders for you when you get tired and need that extra boost!
If you’d like a personalized training plan and coaching to support your journey, reach out to our partner personal trainer and adventure coach Becki Rupp of Trailblazer Wellness. She’ll help you build strength and stamina for hiking (and dance parties)! Check out her plans at Trailblazer Wellness and email her at becki@trailblazerwellness.com for a free initial consultation.

There are two main climbing seasons on Kilimanjaro: the dry periods from June through October and late December through March. These windows typically offer the most stable conditions, clearer skies, and safer trail footing. But it is still a mountain, and weather will always be unpredictable. Even in the “dry” seasons, you should be prepared for rain, sleet, and occasionally heavy snowfall as we gain elevation. That variability is part of the challenge and beauty of climbing Kilimanjaro.
-
Within the recommended seasonal windows of June through October and December through March, we choose our dates very intentionally. We don’t schedule at random — we choose moments that add meaning, symbolism, and connection to the journey, creating summit experiences that go deeper than simply reaching the top.
International Women’s Day Summit (March)
Since 2014, we’ve gathered on March 8 to climb and move mountains together. There is no better way to honor International Women’s Day than standing on the roof of Africa with women from around the globe, celebrating achievements and supporting one another. This one has a special place in our hearts because it was WHOA’s first-ever Kilimanjaro summit — the spark that ignited a growing, global community.Solstice Summit (June)
Reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise during the June Solstice is unforgettable. The Solstice, celebrated as a time of renewal and reflection, represents the rebirth of light. It’s packed with symbolic meaning for anyone looking to hit reset, invite growth, or mark a powerful personal moment. You feel that energy at the top.Full Moon Summit (July/August)
Climbing under the glow of a full moon makes the entire mountain feel electrified. The summit night embodies completion, clarity, and a moment to reflect on how far you’ve come — literally and figuratively. It’s one of the most visually stunning and emotionally powerful summit experiences there is.New Year’s on Kilimanjaro (December/January)
There’s a saying: “How you ring in the New Year is how you’ll live the next one.” We take that seriously — and joyfully. Singing and dancing into the New Year on Kilimanjaro with incredible women sets the tone for courage, community, and unforgettable experiences in the year ahead.

DAY 1
KARIBU IN TANZANIA
MOSHI
Arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) in Moshi by noon at the latest. We’ll be there waiting to welcome you with big smiles and that unmistakable Tanzanian hospitality before whisking you to our cozy lodge. This afternoon you’ll meet our phenomenal local mountain guides and go through a gear check to make sure everyone is dialed in and set up for success. Then we’ll gather for a team briefing to walk through what’s ahead, answer questions, and ease nerves in the best way—together. We’ll end the day with a WHOA welcome dinner, get to know each other, and toast to the adventure of a lifetime that starts first thing tomorrow!
Included Meals: Welcome Dinner
Stay: AMEG Lodge or similar
PLEASE NOTE: We highly recommend our adventurers arrive at least one day early if possible! This will give you time to settle in, and have a buffer in case of flight/luggage delays. If you plan on arriving early or staying late, it’s your responsibility to book extra nights at the lodge. There will be detailed information on how to do this in the Adventure HUB you’ll receive leading up to your adventure.
DAY 2
TWENDE INTO THE RAINFOREST
HIKE DAY 1 of 7
Time to rise and shine! After breakfast, we’ll head to the park gate where our Machame Route adventure officially begins. We’ll register and take in the moment…this is where the mountain becomes real! Our WHOA mountain family will be there organizing and loading all of our gear, making sure everything is set and nothing gets overlooked. Then we step into the lush, misty rainforest and start our trek. Keep your eyes peeled for bright Impatiens Kilimanjari flowers and Colobus monkeys swinging through the trees as we wind our way toward Machame Camp. Once we arrive, we’ll settle in, watch the sunset glow across the forest canopy, and share dinner together as the mountain starts working its quiet magic.

After breakfast, we’ll leave the glades of the rainforest and enter a completely new and beautiful climate zone: the heath. This area is full of everlasting flowers, moss-draped trees, and wide-open views you’ll want to soak in. After a little scrambling above the tree line, we’ll make our way to Shira Camp with time to relax and enjoy a breathtaking view of the sun setting over Mount Meru!

TIME TO ACCLIMATIZE
HIKE DAY 3 of 7
From the Shira Plateau, we’ll climb into a wild, lunar landscape on our way to the Lava Tower—our highest point so far at 15,092 ft. After lunch and time to acclimatize, we’ll descend into a grove of towering Senecio Kilimanjari, those Dr. Seuss-esque trees that only grow here in high-elevations and make the whole valley feel otherworldly. Our camp tonight sits in the shadow of the massive Baranco Wall, which rises above us like a cathedral of rock. As the sun drops, you’ll look out over Moshi far below and feel the momentum of the days ahead settling in!
Hike Time: 10+ hours
Elevation:
12,598 - 15,092 - 12,959 ft
3,840 - 4,600 - 3,950 m

DAY 5
CLIMB AND SHINE
HIKE DAY 4 of 7
This morning we’ll stow our poles and head up the legendary Baranco Wall—an energetic scramble that’s way more fun than intimidating! On the way up we’ll pause at the “kissing rock,” that hilarious Kilimanjaro ritual that always sparks laughter and camaraderie. At the top, we’ll take a breather, share tea, and soak in the spectacular panorama. (And if the mountain plays nice with the weather, we’ll get one of the clearest views of Kili’s snowy summit.) Today’s trek is shorter by design, giving our bodies valuable acclimatization time. We’ll settle into Karanga Camp for the afternoon and evening, rest our legs, savor the view of summit (again, weather willing), and let the reality of what’s ahead sink in.

DAY 7
STARS TO SUMMIT
HIKE DAY 6 of 7
Around midnight, we’ll flip on our headlamps and begin our summit push under a sky full of stars. It’s steep and it’s long, and this is the most mentally and physically demanding part of the entire trek. But the energy of the group, and the rhythm of our guides’ Swahili summit chants, will carry you further than you think possible. This is when you dig deep and remember why you chose this mountain and this team. As dawn breaks, we’ll reach Stella Point at 18,598 ft (5,670 m) just in time to watch the sun rise over Mawenzi Peak. From here, it’s a steady, one-hour walk along the rim and past the remnants of the Furtwängler Glacier to Uhuru Peak — 19,341 ft (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa! We’ll take it in, take photos, and let the moment land.
Then we’ll descend the scree back to camp, grab some food and rest, and in the early afternoon continue down through the alpine desert and moorland until we reach camp below in the heath zone. By the time we reach camp again, you’ll feel lighter, stronger, and aware of just how much you’re capable of!
Hike Time:

Near the Mweka Gate, we’ll have a special WHOA style celebration lunch (complete with some celebratory food and drinks) before driving back to our hotel in Moshi for refreshing showers. We’ll have the night free to relax and reflect on the amazing experience we shared together and what great adventures are to come!

MOSHI
At WHOA, we’ve learned that the impact of these adventures doesn’t end when the boots comes off. Today we get to slow down, take a breath, and reflect in true WHOA style on everything we’ve done together. It’s such a reminder of how powerful it is when women show up for one another in the wild! In the afternoon: either catch your flight home with memories that will stay with you for a lifetime, or continue the adventure and head out on an unforgettable safari through Tanzania’s iconic national parks!
Included Meals: Breakfast (Lunch and Dinner on Safari only)
Accommodation: Pembeni Lodge or similar
*If you aren’t staying on for the safari, you can book your departing flight anytime AFTER 2 PM on day 9. If you are staying on for the safari, you can book your departing flight anytime AFTER 8:30 PM on day 11.
DAY 10
NGORONGORO CRATER
SAFARI DAY 1 of 2
Be ready for an early wake up call as we head to the one and only Ngorongoro Crater. This natural wonder is a cradle for wildlife, and is home to zebras, lions, elephants, flamingos, hippos, cheetahs, antelopes, ostriches, warthogs, hyenas...you get the idea! After a full day of game viewing in the park, we'll head back to our safari lodge for dinner and some peaceful R&R.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Stay: Pembeni Lodge or similar
DAY 11
TARANGIRE TO AIRPORT
SAFARI DAY 2 of 2
We'll set off bright and early to Tarangire National Park, a beautiful reserve that is famous for its vast herds of elephants roaming around giant baobab trees. After another beautiful day of game viewing, we'll head out on the 3+ hour drive to Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO). If you're flying this evening, it's important that you DO NOT schedule a flight before 8:30pm, in fact, it's common for people to book their flights out the next day to enjoy a little more down time (and a shower!) before getting on a plane. If you choose to depart the following day, you can stay at an airport lodge or also return to Moshi if you want to spend more time there. After safari, we recommend continuing on to Zanzibar for some sun, sand and turquoise blue waters if you can! We don't have a group itinerary for this special, historic Tanzanian island, but are happy to help you put together exactly what you are looking for, so just ask.
Included: Breakfast, Lunch
