WHAT TO EXPECT

Want to push yourself to the limit, and return home reinvigorated and reconnected with your best self? You’ve come to the right place! Kilimanjaro has a special place in our hearts at WHOA because it’s where the idea and courage to start WHOA began - so believe us when we say this mountain can change your life! While Kilimanjaro isn’t a technical trek, it’s by no means a walk in the park. You’ll need to dig deep physically and mentally every single day. It’s a good match for intermediate and experienced hikers who do well at high altitudes (think 5,895m), and love being on their feet all day and tent camping under the stars at night. Please thoroughly read the Daily Breakdown and make sure you understand all the risks and rewards that come along with climbing this magnificent mountain.

With the addition of Root Adventures and Adventure Mamas Initiative, you'll have the opportunity to deepen this incredible experience. Nature commands presence, and what better way to experience nature than through a mindful awareness that awakens your inherent connection to yourself, others, and the land (Mother Earth) as you explore the expansiveness rooted in this adventure-based challenge. The daily guided mindfulness practices and opportunities for reflection and sharing will leave you feeling nourished and deeply connected to the natural world! For those who identify as mothers, this expedition is meant to magnify the wealth of your potential and the range of possible selves you can become beyond the moniker of mama!

THE CONDITIONS
THE HIGH LIFE

WHOA's all womens hiking group reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro walking on a dirt path with a glacier in the background

This is a high altitude adventure, and the conditions and elements on the mountain, especially the higher we climb, are extreme, unpredictable and out of your and our control - that’s part of its beauty! While Kilimanjaro is often called every (wo)man’s Everest, DO NOT underestimate the effect that altitude plays on your body! At elevations over 914m, your VO2 max (maximal oxygen consumption) decreases about 2.6 percent for every 305m. What does a VO2 max decrease mean, you ask? It means sluggishness, loss of appetite, fatigue, and the inability to exert the same amount of energy that you could at lower elevations. Altitude sickness is also a real possibility - this is a big part of what makes a Kilimanjaro trek so challenging. Be ready to embrace what Mother Nature throws our way, and put on another layer and dance when it gets cold (which it will - we’re hiking to an Arctic climate zone after all). Always remember the one thing that we can all control is our attitude!

TRAINING
IT DOESN'T GET EASIER, YOU GET STRONGER

Women hugging and smiling surrounded by fog on one of WHOA's Kilimanjaro trips.

We’re not going to sugar coat it, turning dreams into reality is hard work! This trek is seven full days of hiking with a daypack and all the ups and downs that come along with it. Bottom line, the better trained you are, the more enjoyable your experience will be! Stay active and start breaking in your boots and daypack on your training hikes ASAP. Read up about training for Kilimanjaro here, and prep yourself. Your future self and team will thank you! And remember, we’re always here to help guide you and answer any questions you may have.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST
REAL TALK

a woman being helped by a Kilimanjaro guide

If hiking for seven days at altitude, in all sorts of weather, while sleeping in a tent, and perhaps losing a toenail on the descent sounds like your idea of a good time - you’re in the right place! You’re ready to not only accept, but embrace a culture that’s different than what you’re used to. (In fact, you’re already working on your Swahili - Poa!) This is a perfect adventure if you’re looking to disconnect from your creature comforts, and connect with a team of awesome adventurous women!

The Kilimanjaro Mindfulness Trek Grant

“A grant to enhance accessibility and diversity within the realm of life-altering adventure travel”

Adventure travel enriches our depth of connection to ourselves, others, and the world around us. This funding opportunity – for the Kilimanjaro Mindfulness Trek, an excursion curated through a collaborative partnership between Adventure Mamas Initiative (AMI), Root Adventures, and WHOA travel – seeks to reduce financial barriers that would prohibit mamas, as well as other female-identifying and non-binary individuals, from partaking in this transformative experience. Accessibility and opportunity are key to eliminating wealth and racial equity gaps within the rather homogenous, privilege-laced space of travel.

MOSHI

Arrive at Kilimanjaro airport (JRO) in Moshi by noon at the latest. We’ll be there to give you a warm Tanzanian welcome and bring you to our lodge. In the afternoon, we'll do a gear check to make sure everyone is fully equipped and ready to go. At night, we’ll all get together for a Adventure Mamas Welcome Dinner to meet the amazing guides and get briefed on the adventure that lies ahead of us!

Included: Welcome Dinner
Accommodation:
AMEG Lodge or similar

PLEASE NOTE: We highly recommend our adventurers arrive at least one day early if possible! This will give you time to settle in, do your gear check, and have a buffer in case of flight delays. If you plan on arriving early or staying late, it’s your responsibility to book extra nights at the lodge. There will be detailed information on how to do this in the Adventure HUB you’ll receive leading up to your adventure.

Be sure to keep an eye out for the colorful Impatiens Kilimanjari flowers and Colobus Monkeys as we make our way to Machame Camp. In the evening, we’ll have time to relax, watch the sunset, and enjoy dinner together.

After a little scrambling above the tree line, we’ll make our way to Shira Camp just in time to enjoy a dance party and a breathtaking view of the sun setting over Mount Meru!

SHIRA CAMP to BARANCO CAMP via LAVA TOWER

Elevation: 3,840 - 4,600 - 3,950 m
Hiking Time: 6 - 8 hours

Distance: 10 km

From the Shira Plateau, we’ll head upwards, through a barren surreal landscape, to Lava Tower, which is our highest elevation so far at 4,600 m. After lunch and some acclimatization, we’ll head down through a forest of towering Senecio Kilimanjari that look straight out of Dr. Seuss’ imagination! Our home for the night will be in a beautiful valley beside the Baranco Wall overlooking Moshi.

In the morning, we’ll pack up our hiking poles and tackle the famous (and fun!) challenge of steep scrambling that is the Baranco Wall! At the top, we'll be rewarded with some of the most amazing views and photo ops on Kili. Today's a relatively short hiking day, that helps us acclimatize more and give our bodies some rest. We’ll spend the afternoon and evening at Karanga Camp where we'll be able to take in a beautiful view of the summit, and reflect on what's to come!

BARAFU CAMP to UHURU PEAK to MILLENNIUM CAMP

Elevation: 4,600 - 5,895 - 3,800 m
Hiking Time: 7 - 8 hrs ascent / 5 - 8 hrs descent
Distance: 5 km ascent / 11 km descent

Around midnight, we’ll put on our head lamps and start our ascent to the summit under thousands of twinkling stars. It’s a steep, long night, and the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. However, the energy of our group, and the rhythm of our guides’ Swahili chants will help you keep going! This is the time when we will all dig deep and remember why we are doing this together. We should get to Stella Point (5,670 m) just as the sun is rising over Mawenzi peak. From there, it’s a slight, 1-hour ascent along the extraordinary Furtwängler Glacier to UHURU PEAK! After taking in the views and taking some pics, we’ll make our way back down the skree to our camp. In the afternoon, after some rest, we’ll head back through the Alpine Desert and Moorland to our camp nestled in the Heath.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After our last breakfast (and dance party) with our new mountain family, we’ll start our final descent down through the Rainforest and off Kilimanjaro. At Mweka Gate, we’ll have a special Adventure Mamas celebration lunch (complete with some celebratory food and drinks) before driving back to our hotel in Moshi for much deserved showers. We’ll have the night free to relax and reflect on the amazing experience we shared together and what great adventures are to come!

Sharing
The Love

MOSHI

We believe adventures resonate long after we leave the trail. We use today to reflect on our epic shared journey and celebrate how special and powerful it is when women come together. In the early evening, you can catch your plane back home* if you need to go, OR head out for a once in a lifetime safari to the region's stunning national parks!

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (on Safari only)
Accommodation:
Pembeni Lodge or similar

*If you aren’t staying on for the safari, you can book your departing flight anytime AFTER 5 PM on day 9. If you are staying on for the safari, you can book your departing flight anytime AFTER 8:30 PM on day 11.

Where The
Wild Things Are

KARATU to NGORONGORO CRATER

Be ready for an early wake up call as we head to the one and only Ngorongoro Crater. This natural wonder is a cradle for wildlife, and is home to zebras, lions, elephants, flamingos, hippos, cheetahs, antelopes, ostriches, warthogs, hyenas...you get the idea! After a full day of game viewing in the park, we'll head to our exotic safari lodge for dinner and some much deserved R&R.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation:
Pembeni Lodge or similar

MAR 2
Lions, Zebras,
and Elephants,
Oh My!

KARATU to TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK to AIRPORT

We'll set off bright and early to Tarangire National Park, a beautiful reserve that is famous for its vast herds of elephants roaming around giant baobab trees. After another beautiful day of game viewing, we'll head out on the 4 hour drive to Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO). If you're flying this evening, it's important that you DO NOT schedule a flight before 8:30pm, in fact, it's common for people to book their flights out the next day to enjoy a little more down time before getting on a plane. If you choose to depart the following day, you can stay at an airport lodge or also return to Moshi if you want to spend more time there. After safari, we recommend continuing on to Zanzibar for some sun, sand and turquoise blue waters if you can! We don't have a group itinerary for this special, historic Tanzanian island, but are happy to help you put together exactly what you are looking for, so just ask.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch
