Summiting on International Women’s Day, New Year’s Eve, the Solstice or under the glow of a full moon! We’ve specially designed our Kilimanjaro Adventures to make summit night even more meaningful and special!
WHAT TO EXPECT
Want to push yourself to the limit, and then just a bit further? You’ve come to the right place! Kilimanjaro has a special place in our hearts at WHOA because it’s where the idea and courage to start WHOA began - so believe us when we say this mountain can change your life! While Kilimanjaro isn’t a technical trek, it’s by no means a walk in the park. You’ll need to dig deep physically and mentally every single day. It’s a good match for intermediate and experienced hikers who do well at high altitudes (think 5,895m), and love being on their feet all day and tent camping under the stars at night. Please thoroughly read the Daily Breakdown and make sure you understand all the risks and rewards that come along with climbing this magnificent mountain.
THE CONDITIONS
THE HIGH LIFE
This is a high altitude adventure, and the conditions and elements on the mountain, especially the higher we climb, are extreme, unpredictable and out of your and our control - that’s part of its beauty! While Kilimanjaro is often called every (wo)man’s Everest, DO NOT underestimate the effect that altitude plays on your body! At elevations over 914m, your VO2 max decreases about 2.6 percent for every 305m. What does a VO2 max decrease mean, you ask? It means sluggishness, loss of appetite, fatigue, and the inability to exert the same amount of energy that you could at lower elevations. Altitude sickness is also a real possibility - this is a big part of what makes a Kilimanjaro trek so challenging. Be ready to embrace what mother nature throws our way, and put on another layer and dance when it gets cold (which it will - we’re hiking to an Arctic climate zone after all). Always remember the one thing that we can all control is our attitude!
TRAINING
IT DOESN'T GET EASIER, YOU GET STRONGER
We’re not going to sugar coat it, turning dreams into reality is hard work! This trek is seven full days of hiking with a daypack and all the ups and downs that come along with it. Bottom line, the better trained you are, the more enjoyable your experience will be! Stay active and start breaking in your boots and daypack on your training hikes ASAP. Read up about training for Kilimanjaro here, and prep yourself! Your future self and team will thank you!
LAST BUT NOT LEAST
REAL TALK
If hiking for seven days at altitude, in all sorts of weather, while sleeping in a tent, and perhaps losing a toenail on the descent sounds like your idea of a good time - you’re in the right place! You’re ready to not only accept, but embrace a culture that’s different than what you’re used to. (In fact, you’re already working on your Swahili - Poa!) This is a perfect adventure if you’re looking to disconnect from your creature comforts, and connect with a team of awesome adventurous women!

Empowering and connecting women through adventure is at the heart of everything we do at WHOA. Our special style of giving back is about sharing experiences with local women and their communities - it’s something that makes our adventures more meaningful for everyone! From our guide teams to the hotels we stay at, we go the distance to find amazing local partners and small businesses that share our values, which in turn creates the most authentic, sustainable and mutually beneficial travel experiences.
For Kilimanjaro, we provide the opportunity for local women in the region to join us on each climb to experience and conquer the mountain that they’ve lived next to their whole lives. The stories and experiences we share with one another over the course of our adventures creates special connections that inspire and transcend the mountain. You can meet some of our fantastic former climbers here, or watch this 360 video featuring, Elizabeth, a local climber from one of our International Women’s Day summits!
While we like to dance and have fun on the trail, safety is the #1 priority at WHOA. Our mountain guides have received extensive training in first aid, mountain rescue, wildlife, and are registered with the Kilimanjaro National Park (KINAPA). We also work closely with The Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) to ensure our crew receives ethical treatment and the fair wages that they deserve. Like KPAP, we recognize the value of the demanding labor our porters and guides perform, and we’re dedicated to helping them constantly improve the safety and quality of the Kilimanjaro experience for everyone. It goes without saying, our Tanzanian mountain crew is the best in the business, and you'll quickly become one big family on the mountain!
We’re also dedicated to protecting the places we love to explore, and in 2019 launched our sustainability initiatives that strive to lessen our impact and encourages our community to be responsible travelers!
Above all, at WHOA, we make sure that all our adventures support women, the local community, and fill a need that is of value to our partners. For that reason, the partnerships can and do vary depending on their needs, the season, and the abilities and desires of our group. In each case, we do due diligence to seek out local partners that are doing valuable, sustainable work, and we work closely with them to understand their needs and create an experience that will truly be of value to them and you!

While Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, it’s most enjoyable in the dry seasons from mid-December to mid-March and June - September. Which is why we plan all our group adventures in these months!
That said, Kilimanjaro is a free standing mountain (the tallest in the world!) and the weather is very unpredictable! Rainstorms can blow in out of nowhere, which is why you need to be prepared mentally and physically for hiking in the rain and have all the proper gear. No matter what time of year you’re hiking, it will always be COLD on Kilimanjaro. Temperatures get to freezing by night one, and are usually down between -15°F (-26°Cpack light and stay warm) and 15°F (-10°C) on summit night. No matter the time of year, in order to have the most enjoyable trek possible, we recommend layering so that you can pack light and stay warm while you’re hiking at altitude and camping on Kilimanjaro. -
One of the great things about Kilimanjaro is that every day is a completely new and exciting adventure with diverse and different landscapes to take in! That said, there are some things that remain constant from day to day. Every morning you and your tent buddy will be woken up bright and early to pack up your things, have coffee, fill your water bladders, eat breakfast, and head out for a full day of hiking! We’ll be walking at a pace that is probably slower than you are used to (pole pole, as they say in Swahili), and this is to help your body properly and safely acclimatize. You’ll always have a certified local mountain guide with you when you’re trekking (we maintain a 1:4 guide/climber ratio), and we'll take several breaks for pictures, snacks, and a hot prepared lunch along the way. You will carry what you need for the day (layers, snacks, water, sunscreen, etc.) in your daypack, and our crew will carry all the tents, gear and your large duffel from camp to camp for you. They’ll usually have our entire camp set up by the time we reach it in the late afternoon - Did we mention how amazing these guys are!? When we get to our camps in the evening, we encourage you to enjoy the spectacular views and unwind a bit before dinnertime. Dinners are always well-balanced and usually consist of soup, rice or pasta, sauce, a protein and fruit for dessert. Bedtime is usually early, as you'll want to be well rested for the next day of hiking that awaits!

Kilimanjaro is a tremendous physical and mental undertaking, so training is essential for your safety and enjoyment! There’s no such thing as being too prepared. Bottom line, the fitter and stronger you are, the better your experience will be. Aerobic fitness allows your body to function more efficiently with less oxygen for consecutive days of high altitude hiking, and being strong and conditioned makes it easier for your body to handle the stress of walking up and downhill.
One of the best ways to train is to get out there and hike as much as possible. After all, that’s what you will be doing on the mountain! Train at least a few days a week walking and/or jogging on inclines and declines to simulate the ups and downs on Kilimanjaro. If you don’t have trails accessible, practice uphill on a treadmill or stair climber, and downhill on a long staircase. Over the course of your training, gradually increase the time and distance, while maintaining a moderate pace. While you’re training, always wear and break in the boots and day pack you plan on bringing! This will help prevent blisters and get your shoulders, back and hips used to the points of contact and weight.
In addition to aerobic training, incorporate a day or two per week of strength training for your core, upper body and legs. This will increase your stamina and help you feel more comfortable lifting and carrying your pack. Do some stretching after each workout too – bonus points for weekly (or more!) yoga sessions.
Before you leave for your Kilimanjaro trek, you need to be able to hike comfortably for a full day (approx. 8-10 hours) for multiple days, with elevation changes, while carrying a full day pack. If you have the opportunity to hike at high altitude, take advantage of it! It’s the best and only way to get used to the feeling of being active with less oxygen. As with all training, you should taper off and rest the last 2 weeks leading up to the big event, so your body has time to recover.
Investing the time to prepare yourself will make it that much easier to enjoy your time on the mountain. If you currently have a not-so-healthy lifestyle, use the climb as your motivation to change! Eat healthier. Drink less. Don’t smoke. Get more sleep. Don’t worry. Be happy! And remember, physical training is just one part of getting in shape. Having a positive attitude will work wonders for you when you get tired and need that extra boost!

There is a healthy mix of solo travelers and ladies who come with a friend, but the greatest thing about a WHOA adventure is that we walk in as strangers and leave as family. If you're traveling solo, we'll pair you up with another solo traveler to room with before the trek and tent buddy with on the trail. You'll be amazed at how quickly bonds are formed between our mountain family!

KILIMANJARO ADVENTURE
DAILY BREAKDOWN
Arrive at Kilimanjaro airport (JRO) in Moshi by noon at the latest. We’ll be there to give you a warm Tanzanian welcome and bring you to our lodge. In the afternoon, we'll do a gear check to make sure everyone is fully equipped and ready to go. At night, we’ll all get together for a WHOA welcome dinner to meet the amazing guides and get briefed on the adventure that lies ahead of us!
Included: Welcome Dinner
Accommodation: AMEG Lodge or similar
PLEASE NOTE: We highly recommend our adventurers arrive at least one day early if possible! This will give you time to settle in, do your gear check, and have a buffer in case of flight delays. If you plan on arriving early or staying late, it’s your responsibility to book extra nights at the lodge. There will be detailed information on how to do this in the Adventure HUB you’ll receive leading up to your adventure.
Time to rise and shine! After breakfast, we’ll ride to the gate where the Machame route, and our epic journey begin! We’ll start the trek in the early afternoon on a winding trail through the lush and misty Rainforest (they don't call it a rainforest for nothing)! Be sure to keep an eye out for the colorful Impatiens Kilimanjari flowers and Colobus Monkeys as we make our way to Machame Camp. In the evening, we’ll have time to relax, watch the sunset, and enjoy dinner together.
Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After breakfast, we’ll leave the glades of the rainforest and enter a completely new and beautiful climate zone: the Heath. It’s characterized by its everlasting flowers and mossy low trees, which we'll stop to enjoy on several beautiful overlooks. After a little scrambling above the tree line, we’ll make our way to Shira Camp just in time to enjoy a dance party and a breathtaking view of the sun setting over Mount Meru!
Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
From the Shira Plateau, we’ll head upwards, through a barren surreal landscape, to Lava Tower, which is our highest elevation so far at 4,600 m. After lunch and some acclimatization, we’ll head down through a forest of towering Senecio Kilimanjari that look straight out of Dr. Seuss’ imagination! Our home for the night will be in a beautiful valley beside the Baranco Wall overlooking Moshi.
Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
In the morning, we’ll pack up our hiking poles and tackle the famous (and fun!) challenge of steep scrambling that is the Baranco Wall! At the top, we'll be rewarded with some of the most amazing views and photo ops on Kili. Today's a relatively short hiking day, that helps us acclimatize more and give our bodies some rest. We’ll spend the afternoon and evening at Karanga Camp where we'll be able to take in a beautiful view of the summit, and reflect on what's to come!
Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After breakfast and taking in some more great views of Uhuru Peak in the early morning light, we’ll make our way up to Barafu Camp through the barren Alpine Desert. We’ll get there in the early afternoon to eat, rest up, and gather our collective courage...because tonight is the big night we’ve been preparing for!
Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Around midnight, we’ll put on our head lamps and start our ascent to the summit under thousands of twinkling stars. It’s a steep, long night, and the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. However, the energy of our group, and the rhythm of our guides’ Swahili chants will help you keep going! This is the time when we will all dig deep and remember why we are doing this together. We should get to Stella Point (5,670 m) just as the sun is rising over Mawenzi peak. From there, it’s a slight, 1-hour ascent along the extraordinary Furtwängler Glacier to UHURU PEAK! After taking in the views and taking some pics, we’ll make our way back down the skree to our camp. In the afternoon, after some rest, we’ll head back through the Alpine Desert and Moorland to our camp nestled in the Heath.
Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After our last breakfast (and dance party) with our new mountain family, we’ll start our final descent down through the Rainforest and off Kilimanjaro. At Mweka Gate, we’ll have a special WHOA style celebration lunch (complete with some celebratory food and drinks) before driving back to our hotel in Moshi for much deserved showers. We’ll have the night free to relax and reflect on the amazing experience we shared together and what great adventures are to come!
Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
At WHOA, we believe adventures resonate long after we leave the trail. We use today to reflect on our epic shared journey and celebrate how special and powerful it is when women come together. In the early evening, you can catch your plane back home if you need to go, OR head out for a once in a lifetime safari to the region's stunning national parks!
Included: Breakfast (Lunch & Dinner on Safari only)
Accommodation: Pembeni Lodge or similar
*If you aren’t staying on for the safari, you can book your departing flight anytime AFTER 5 PM on day 9. If you are staying on for the safari, you can book your departing flight anytime AFTER 8:30 PM on day 11.
Be ready for an early wake up call as we head to the one and only Ngorongoro Crater. This natural wonder is a cradle for wildlife, and is home to zebras, lions, elephants, flamingos, hippos, cheetahs, antelopes, ostriches, warthogs, hyenas...you get the idea! After a full day of game viewing in the park, we'll head to our exotic safari lodge for dinner and some much deserved R&R.
Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Pembeni Lodge or similar
We'll set off bright and early to Tarangire National Park, a beautiful reserve that is famous for its vast herds of elephants roaming around giant baobab trees. After another beautiful day of game viewing, we'll head out on the 4 hour drive to Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO). If you're flying this evening, it's important that you DO NOT schedule a flight before 8:30pm, in fact, it's common for people to book their flights out the next day to enjoy a little more down time before getting on a plane. If you choose to depart the following day, you can stay at an airport lodge or also return to Moshi if you want to spend more time there. After safari, we recommend continuing on to Zanzibar for some sun, sand and turquoise blue waters if you can! We don't have a group itinerary for this special, historic Tanzanian island, but are happy to help you put together exactly what you are looking for, so just ask.
Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Itinerary subject to change based on availability and unforeseen conditions, but that's part of the adventure! Even when things change, trust you'll be well taken care of with WHOA quality, professionalism, and TLC!

”When someone asks how I made it to the summit, I don’t reply with a litany of gear, or training regimens. I reached the top because of the collective energy and support of the women that I climbed with. They lifted me up when the mountain had beaten me down.”
