HELPING THE HOME FORECLOSURE CRISIS IN DETROIT
In 2014 we had the privilege of hiking Mount Kilimanjaro with Michele Oberholtzer. Michele's good character and compassion was evident from the first moment on the mountain. Since that summit on Kilimanjaro, Michele has been working tirelessly to save homes and keep families together in her home city of Detroit, Michigan, through a nonprofit she founded in 2014 as a response to the home foreclosure crisis. Her organization, The Tricycle Collective, is a woman-led volunteer-powered nonprofit organization working to provide additional support to Detroit families with young children who live in homes facing tax foreclosure.
THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE TRICYCLE COLLECTIVE
While walking down a street in one Detroit neighborhood, Michele noticed tricycles in the front yards of homes that were up for foreclosure. She knew this meant families with small children lived there. She knew they were more than just houses, they were homes, and they were about to be taken away from these families. This was enough to trigger Michele to dig deeper into the system and uncover what it would take to keep these rightful tenants in their homes. Michele learned that a bid of only $500/home in the annual Wayne County Tax Foreclosure Auction would save the house from ending up in the hands of investors, spare families from eviction, and, most impressively, allow families to own their homes and end the cycle of renting. Michele knew this needed to happen in order to keep communities and neighborhoods together and stable. So, Michele and The Tricycle Collective made it their mission to raise money and awareness to make the bids happen.
Since the Tricycle Collective first launched in 2014, they have fundraised $90,000 to help Detroit families. Michele is a warrior on the front lines helping women, children, and families in her city stay in their homes and avoid homelessness. She's created a movement that is contributing to a stronger more stable Detroit for future generations, and we are so honored to have her a part of the WHOA family!
You can help the The Tricycle Collective continue to save homes and change the lives of families in the Detroit area.
P.S. On top of all of this, Michele is running for a seat in the House of Reps as District 4 State Representative in Michigan in 2018! We're inspired! Be sure to check out her campaign HERE.
